June 2013: Fashion Show in London features designs inspired by Southampton's 'Sound in Space' Work

Precis with links to formal publications: The 'Sound in Space' work (which produced a "world's first" planetarium show in April 2012 and featured in the Dutch National Quiz in December 2012 - see below for both) inspired designs in a fashion show in London. Prof Leighton answered questions of the designer to ensure the designs properly reflected the underlying physics.

December 2012: 'Smart Stethoscope' used on hundreds of patients

Precis with links to formal publications: The 'Smart stethoscope' (earlier developments are which are detailed in the October 2008 and November 2004 stories below) passes a landmark in treating patients, as the Royal Society publishes details of how the decision was made in the development of the device to progress from relatively inexpensive Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations to the much more expensive clinical trials. December 2012: Dutch national Quiz features question on Southampton's 'Sound in Space' Work

Precis with links to formal publications: The 'Sound in Space' work (which produced a "world's first" planetarium show in April 2012 - see below) was used as one of the 15 questions in the 19th annual Dutch science quiz on TV.. One million people watched this on TV. Fifteen questions will be published in the newspapers beforehand and people try to answer them in the hope of winning prizes but most of all because of the honor of winning. Additionally, Prof. Leighton transformed the sound of a presenter singing so that she sang with the voice she would have had on Mars.

July 2012: Do dolphins think nonlinearly?

Precis with links to formal publications: Whilst the November 2010 story (see below) developed the world's first sonar that can operate in bubbly water, there is no conclusive evidence that any species of dolphin uses such pulses. However one feature of dolphin echolocation clicks which is common is the variation in click amplitude from click to click. This has never been explained, and here the nonlinear processing introduced in the November 2010 story (see below) is generalized and shown to be capable of detecting fish in bubbly water (such as the bubble nets some dolphins blow when hunting) using real dolphin pulses. Whilst this does not prove that dolphins use such nonlinear processing, it shows that it is possible, provides a manmade sonar for bubbly water that requires less sophisticated hardware than the sonar in the November 2010 story, and provides a possible explanation for the pulse-to-pulse variation in amplitude observed when dolphins echolocate. Published by the Royal Society with a paper and a video.

Precis with links to formal publications: In an effort to build sensors to measure bubbles in pipelines, we first established the baseline for acoustic propagation in bubble-free conditions (click here; with validation and an interesting extraterrestrial application here). We then used this to show how to make the measurement in bubbly pipes work, and why the current method does not work (click here). The equipment we build was used for a TV demo (click here) and demonstrations for the public (click here).

April 2012: The world's first planetarium show featuring the sounds and voices of other worlds

Precis with links to formal publications: Earlier work on propagation of sound in the oceans of Jupiter's icy moons (click here) and the unexpected design issues for acoustical instruments for probes to other worlds (click here and here) led to predictions of sounds of other worlds, beginning with 'waterfalls' made of methane on Saturn's moon Titan (click here) and eventually leading to the ability to predict the sounds of voices and musical instruments on other worlds (click here and here). These discoveries were built into a device which was licensed to a local planetarium to allow them to produce for the public, for the first time (click here), shows about sound in space.
