Health:
During my Placement Year...

I have an existing medical condition/ am a carer for a dependant relative, who should I tell?
Before the Placement Year, we ask all students if there is any appropriate information they wish to communicate to the placement centres. We will pass on this information confidentially to placement supervisors only.
When you meet your supervisor, it is appropriate
to inform them and any other necessary staff at the centre of any medical conditions that may affect your attendance/performance, or any conditions that you are receiving regular treatment for i.e. diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, depression.

What happens if I experience unforeseen extenuating circumstances during the placement year?
Further information can be found in the placement handbook on the main page.
To be considered for placement re-allocation or variation of placement periods, students must comply with the following:
1) Be able to demonstrate exceptional circumstances and hardship, which may include:

2) Students must be able to demonstrate that they have exhausted all other avenues that would have avoided a variation to placement allocation or periods

When do I have to have my OH and CRB checks done for the placement?
Your CRB and OH checks will be done by the host trust, Portsmouth NHS Trust, at the University during the Placement Day in May.
We will tell you what ID/paperwork you will need to provide beforehand. You do not have to pay for these checks.

What do I need to be vaccinated against and how do I go about it?
Occupational Health paperwork and checks are organised by Portsmouth NHS Trust, and further information will be given at the Placement Talk in May. It may be advisory to contact your GP before this meeting to gain your up to date vaccination list, and have any standard vaccinations (such as Tetanus and Polio) updated, as advised by your GP.

What do I do if I am sick or will be absent from the department?
Firstly, phone your department and let them know as soon as possible. If you do not call into your department, University staff will be informed,
and you may be liable to disciplinary action.
You may also need to complete paperwork when you return to work,
so check with your supervisor as to the centre's procedure.
