Centre for

Ultrasonics and Underwater Acoustics

Founded in 2003 by TG Leighton (Professor of Ultrasonics and Underwater Acoustics) as an expansion of the Interdisciplinary Research Group he founded with Dr Birkin in 1998, the Centre is an interdisciplinary partnership of scientists who undertake research, teaching and consultancy at the University of Southampton.

The staff of the Centre have between them trained over 30 PhD students and raised over £10  million of research funding. The peak hit rate to the site exceeded 16,000 in one week.

The collaboration includes personnel embedded in the Southampton Oceanography Centre, the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, and the School of Engineering Sciences.
